The Brave Movement

Zooey Magazine, Brave Movement A letter from your Editor-in-Chief, Lucia Tran. Dear readers,

I am so honored to be writing this letter to you today, especially on the Eve of Christmas. As you may have heard from our social networks, Zooey Magazine has launched a movement and a t-shirt line called "Brave." I am finally able to share with you my thoughts about this movement and why and how it came to be.

When I was seven, my grandmother came to visit my family for a few months. Like most children, I was marveled at the thought of an additional family member in the house, but also cautious with my personal space. Mind you, I was a very hardheaded child - I was often told I acted more like a 'boy,' than I did a 'girl.' I'd rather run around the neighborhood kicking soccer balls, than stay put at home.

My grandmother took good notice of how I behaved, and it dawned on me that she didn't like how my mother allowed me to act. One day, when my grandmother was in the kitchen with me, she began to offer me what she thought was a valuable life lesson. "A woman must learn how to properly cook and clean. It is the duty of the woman to maintain her house to the best degree. I do not agree with how you are allowed to drift about, and ignore your responsibilities. You must grow up to learn how to care for your future husband and children." I was baffled...for I was seven, and I felt she was overstepping her boundaries.

Growing up in the Silicon Valley was liberating. Children my age at that time were always taught about our basic human rights, and about the progressiveness of culture and society in America. We were always taught that our own capabilities extend further than what we can imagine. To be told that I will be nothing but a chef and a cleaning lady…well, that was unsettling to my elementary self.

As I grow older, I look back and try to understand why my grandmother thinks the way she did (and still does). I was raised on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," and she was raised on traditional values from her mother and her grandmother. Clearly, we came from two separate worlds and our circumstances differed substantially.

Being women living in the 21st century, we have incredible privileges that we turn a blind eye to. When Malala Yousafzai (an incredibly brave 15-year-old girl) was shot by the Taliban last year for standing up for girls' education in Pakistan, it was yet another reminder as to how much we have and how much we take advantage of it. For something as basic as education, we sure have overlooked it as one of the greatest opportunities we can take. Malala figured it all out - she figured out the solution to racism, hatred, and discrimination. It's education.

My grandmother didn't have the same opportunities as I did, so we therefore have a clash of perspectives. I was lucky enough to finish basic education, and have the opportunity to continue higher education. I've learned that there is something that stretches far beyond the perimeters of my home - it's a dream. I know that there's more to life than having to serve a man...yet it depends on whether you are courageous enough to realize it. If we allow ourselves to be defeated, we allow our cultures to continue this cycle of inequality. And then to say that one is not a feminist is saddening, since feminism is a vital part of our everyday life.

This "Brave" movement isn't just about school education...it's also about educating women on their own self-worth.

There have been days when I could not get myself up to face the day, because I feared it. And surely, I have encountered my fair share of haunting moments when people have successfully made me feel like nothing.

Starting Zooey, for example, was not an easy road, and one that I thought would have been a dead end. I had those who supported me in the journey, and those who laughed and turned their backs against me. But, here we are. All because, at a moment's notice, I somehow had a hint of bravery...and that led to something incredibly magical and life changing. I wanted to be more than what society wanted of me, I wanted to be a leader in order to make a difference in other people's lives...and to help others become leaders as well.

Because when we are brave, we become world changers...whether that's our world, or someone else's. So it's time we stop living in fear, and time we step out of our own shells and begin making our dreams our realities.

To end this too-long-of-a-letter, here is my favorite video on the Internet.

No matter who you are, and in what position, be brave.

Here's to you all, women of the 21st century.

In the Kitchen with Cassie Scerbo

Cassie Scerbo, Zooey Magazine We spent some time with actress and singer Cassie Scerbo ("Sharknado") in her home, where she cooked a tasty pesto tortellini dish. It smelled so good, we were so ready to eat it off the pot! And she was so sweet enough to share our readers with the recipe - trust us, it's so easy you have to make it for your family dinners!

We also got to speak to Cassie about the holidays, her family, and her future plans!

Ingredients: 20 oz. of tortellini Pestro 1 container of crumbled feta cheese 1 can of black olives 1 cup of cherry tomatoes 1/4 cup of purple onions

Directions: Boil approximately 20 oz of tortellini (Buittoni's) for 5 minutes.

Strain the tortellini and pour into a mixing bowl.

Mix in one container of pesto (preferably Buittoni's as well), one container of crumbled feta cheese, one can of black olives, about a cup of cherry tomatoes (chopped into halves) and a quarter cup of a purple onion (chopped) And voila! You have a very simple, yet delicious pasta dish!

We love your home - so beautifully decorated. Where do you generally shop for home decor? Thank you! I absolutely love Z Gallerie! Also, unfortunately for me, Pier 1 is right around the corner and I just so happen to have an obsession with buying things for my home! Those two places are currently my favorite. Affordable and adorable!

How excited are you for the holidays? What are you doing and where will you be? I'm beyond excited! The holidays are definitely my favorite time of year. I'm going back home to be with my family in Florida. My mom does the traditional Italian Christmas Eve, which consists of seven fish dishes (although she always cooks way more than that). Then there's Christmas morning, which will be my niece's first Christmas this year! I'm so excited! And of course, New Year's, which we usually spend New Year's Eve at our family friend's very well-known, beautiful Italian restaurant, Anthony's Runway 84. My uncle's band, Studio 54, plays classics all night! For actual New Year's day we usually have a bunch of family friends over and just hang out! Basically for me, the holidays mean family and food!

What's been on your wish list? Or your shopping list for others? I had asked for a couple fun things; the new aviator Ray Bans with the colored mirror lenses in blue, a specific David Yurman piece, some new shoes and some other fun things. It's definitely way more exciting to give presents though! I can’t say what I am getting everyone because they will be reading this...

What are your favorite foods?

My favorite food is Italian food. My mother's famous meatballs & ricotta cheesecake are out of this world. Everything she makes is. That's why I have to force myself to go to the gym even more when I visit back home, because I eat twice as much!

We love that you're family-oriented! What are your family traditions?

In our family, every Sunday is traditional. My mom cooks a big Italian feast with the help of my dad. Besides our Christmas Eve tradition, we also do an annual Scerbo girl cookie baking night! I definitely try to take the load off my mom's shoulders and cook for the family from time to time when I'm home, although she always ends up jumping in any way! We love cooking together. For her birthday this year, I made an arrangement of cauliflower crust pizzas (one of my new favorite recipes.) I made a Mediterranean style pizza with pesto, mascarpone spread, feta, chopped grape tomatoes, a little red onion, olives etc. I also made a simple Pepperoni pie and a vegetable one, accompanied by my favorite kale salad.

Where do you enjoy eating in Los Angeles? Some of my favorite restaurants in Los Angeles are Aventine, Angelini, Fabrocini's, Asia De Cuba, Takami, Yatai, Talesai, Studio Cafe, The Six, and Katsuya.

Tell us about all your upcoming projects! What are you most excited to share with your fans? I'm very excited to be singing again! I plan on releasing a fun cover video on December 27th when I do my Just Jared Jr. takeover. It's going to be a simple acoustic cover, the vibe is very cool and moody. It's my Christmas gift to my fans! Also, I can't wait to attend the People's Choice Awards, especially since I have a film that's nominated! And of course my Baby Daddy episodes which will be airing in the spring! I had such a blast with the cast. They're all so talented and sweet!

You're an Italian New Yorker. How much different is living in New York to Los Angeles? Which do you prefer? Well, I was born in New York and raised in Florida, although my family is your typical "New York Italian" family. Everyone has heavy New York accents, and a Sunday Dinner at our house resembles an episode of The Sopranos (minus the violence!) I personally prefer the East Coast because I feel the vibe is a bit more "real", and of course, the city is my favorite place in the world..

How are your roots inspiring the way you live your life? My family and our grounded lifestyle keep me in line. My parents have definitely done an amazing job raising my big sister, big brother and I. We're big on "Trust, loyalty, respect." I've seen so many people go down the wrong path, and I just pray to always stay focused. Staying on track with my personal life keeps me focused on my craft as well. It's all about stability and balance.

Where do you see yourself 5, 10 years from now? Sky's the limit, ya know? There is so much I hope to accomplish in my lifetime between entertainment and charity. Most important is just making my fans and loved ones proud.

Another Day with Sarah Dumont

Sarah Dumont, by Brandon Kidd So today, we present you our editorial with the lovely Sarah Dumont. She is the kind of gal we want to hang out with. For the day that we spent with her, she was a lot of fun - especially with the addition of her sweet dog Kingston! He really knows how to charm a camera, too.

Sarah Dumont, by Brandon Kidd

Your career is really on the rise. You recently had a role in Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut "Don Jon." How have you been handling the rush? I don't think it's really sunk in yet. I'm just having fun living role to role.

Do you use boxing as a stress relief? How long have you been doing it for? Definitely. I've always had an aggressive personality and boxing allows me to let it all our and keep centered. I have been boxing off and on since my early teens and I think it's something I will always do.

Are there any other exercises you do as hobbies? I love to walk places instead of driving and dive into a pool and take a swim whenever I can. I do do a lot of different activities and hit the gym to stay fit, but I wouldn't exactly count then as hobbies.

I see a lot of plants around your home! Are you an outdoors person? Yes and no. I love being outside in the sun and surrounded by greenery and water, but once the temperature drops I'm back inside.

Of course I have to ask about your sweet dog! What’s its name? His name is Kingston! He's a little over two-year-old and even though he thinks he's human, he is actually a Pitt Bull. My boyfriend and I adopted him in March and wasted no time spoiling him!

How do you spend the days with your dog? What do you guys do for fun?

He follows us wherever we go around the house and the neighborhood. He likes to play fetch, tag, hide and go seek, but he's more of a cuddle bug than anything else. We're still working on getting him to behave on the leash but he's great off leash at Runyon and the dog park.

Sarah Dumont, by Brandon Kidd

Tell us about your personal style. How would you describe it? I guess you could say its a bit grunge or rock n' roll but it's really all about comfort for me. All my clothes are interchangeable, My closet is one big collage if black, greys, leather, denim, and flannels. I like being able to go in my closet, throw on whatever I see first and go.

Winter is almost here...kind of! Well, Los Angeles is a tad bit indecisive. Are you eying any pieces to add to your wardrobe?

I live in LA so usually winter means a new hoodie, but I'm spending almost a month in Washington state this winter to help with my older brother's wedding. I'm definitely on the look out for some extra long, extra wide, heavy knit scarfs that I can wrap abound me like a giant knit Hijab.

What’s in store acting-wise? What’s next for you?

I am really excited for pilot season to start after the holidays and as of right now I'm on set filming an episode of Fox's new sitcom "Dads" which should air early next year.
